John F. Markel

YORK – John F. Markel, 91, of York, passed away at 7:53 PM, Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Providence Place in Dover. He was the husband of the late Norma Jean (Heiner) Markel and Norma Jean (Bankert) Markel.

John was born May 16, 1927 in York County and was the son of the late Jacob and Laura (Kopp) Markel.

He was employed by AMP for over 20 years before retiring. He was a former member of the Spring Grove V.F.W. Post # 5265 and a former member of the Winross Truck Club, he was a member of the Shiloh American Legion, Post #791 and St. Jacobs United Church of Christ in York New Salem. John proudly served his country in the United States Marines during WW II.

John is survived by his three daughters, Charlotte Roser and her husband, George of York, Linda Neiderer and her husband, John of Spring Grove, and Nancy Miller and her husband, Craig of York; step-children, William Bankert and his wife Jane, Connie Laughman and her husband Edward, and Sharon Wentz and her husband Rodney; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his 3 brothers, 1 sister and his step-son, Rodney Bankert.

His funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 28, 2019 at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church, 99 East George Street, York New Salem. Viewing will be from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church. Burial will be in Zion Shaffers Cemetery in Seven Valleys. Officiating at the service will be Reverend Lisa Hair from St. Jacobs Lutheran Church in York New Salem. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf.

  1. Deepest condolences to the entire Markel family. I was privileged enough to not only to have met John but to also care for him. Every morning we would have our little chats and that would start our day of laughter and jokes. I would always start with Oh Mr. Markle and his reply, it’s just plan John and we would chuckle. I’m truly going to miss him. Rest easy my dear friend. ❤
