YORK – Owen J. Prowell, 84, of York, passed away at 7:37 PM, Monday, July 23, 2018, at Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Darlene Bailey (Sowers) Prowell whom he married 57 years ago on February 12, 1961.
Owen was born November 19, 1933 in York Haven and was the son of the late James and Grace (Ort) Prowell.
In 1951 he graduated from William Penn High School in York. He was employed by Caterpillar for over 35 years before retiring in 1998. Owen also was the owner along with his wife of the former Prowell’s Grocery Store in Mount Wolf. He was a member of Hawks Club, Starview Sportsmen Association, Susquehanna V.F.W. Post 2493 in Mount Wolf and Christ Lutheran Church in Manchester. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for 2 years from 1954-1956.
In addition to his wife, Darlene, Owen is survived by his two sons, Dwane O. Prowell and his wife Lucinda of York, and Shannon D. Prowell and his wife Cynthia of York; 4 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 step-great grandchildren, and one sister, Ruthanna Krone of York. Owen was preceded in death by his brothers, Stanley Prowell and Harvey Prowell and his sister, Phyllis Daugherty.
His funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 28, 2018, at Christ Lutheran Church, 66 South Main Street, Manchester. Viewings will be Friday, July 27, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at The Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf and Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be his pastor Reverend Patrick Rooney, STS. York County Veterans Honor guard will provide military honors at the graveside service.
