MANCHESTER – Sterling R. “Butch” Cassel, Sr., 73, of Manchester passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Memorial Hospital in York. He was the husband of Penny (Witmer) Cassel whom he married 53 years ago on August 1, 1964.
Sterling was born January 11, 1944 in West Manchester Township, York, PA. and was the son of the late John and Martha (Slaseman) Cassel.
In 1962 he graduated from Northeastern High School in Manchester. He retired in 2006 from Cooper Tool in York after 30 years of employment. He also was employed by York Casket Company, York Container Company and most recently F & S Transportation in Manchester. He was a life member of the Mount Wolf Eagle Fire Company where he served as President, and Assistant Fire Chief and was a member of the WAGO Club in Mount Wolf. He was an avid NASCAR Fan. Sterling grew up on the Wolf Farm in Mount Wolf where his father worked.
In addition to his wife, Penny, Sterling is survived by his two sons, Sterling Cassel, Jr. and his wife Ellen of Cocoa, FL, Rodney Cassel of Manchester; his two God Daughters, Alicia Gibbs of York and Kresta Cunningham of Ocala, FL; his niece Milissa Harvey who was raised by him and was his loving care giver; his brother, Woodrow Cassel and his wife Barb of York; his two sisters, Shirley Gembe of Dover and Gloria Holder and her husband Robert of Manchester.
His funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 4, 2017 at The Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf. Viewings will be Friday, November 3, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 to 10:00 AM both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Suburban Memorial Gardens. Officiating at the service will be The Reverend Philip K. Nace.
