Bertha "Bert" Alwine Obituary

Bertha “Bert” Mae Alwine

DOVER – Bertha Mae “Bert” (Rupert) Alwine, 89, passed away peacefully on June 27th at York Hospital with her family by her side. Bert was the beloved wife of the late John E. Alwine, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage prior to his passing in October of 2016. They had many happy years at their home in Mount Wolf.

She was born on September 6, 1932, to the late Charles and Mary (Hollerbush) Rupert.

Bert was a homemaker but also worked at Naylor’s Candy, The Bon Ton at North Mall as a salesclerk and later in the clerical department at Bon Ton Corporate for many years before retiring. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and shared her faith in the Lord with others whenever the opportunity arose. She was a very loving selfless person who was always ready to lend a listening ear to someone with something on their heart. She did this many times at Providence Place Senior Living Facility during the almost six years that she resided there. She was a prayer warrior and would pray for anyone and any circumstance that moved her heart. Reading her Bible each day was very important to her as evidenced by the well-worn pages of her Bibles throughout the years. She and John were active on the visitation committee at the church and delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years. Bert had many close friends and after moving to Providence Place after John’s passing, she made many more new friends. She had a deep love for the Lord, her family, and her friends. She was loved by all who knew her, had a great sense of humor, and very much enjoyed playing Rummikub with her friends at Providence. She loved making delicious meals for her family throughout the years.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Spicher of Wrightsville, her son, Edward Alwine (Laura) of York, five grandchildren, Katelyn Ness (J. Christian), Andrea Deprato (Matthew), Kyle Spicher (Emily), Matthew Spicher (Lan) and Kristina Spicher, six great-grandchildren, brother-in-law, Barry Shelly, brother-in-law Ronald Alwine (Vonnie) and sister-in-law, Josephine Alwine and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Shelly, Betty Butcher, Ada Ewing, her brother, Irvin Rupert and her son-in-law, Jay Spicher. She will be dearly missed.

Her Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 850 Pleasant Grove Road, York Haven, PA.  Celebration of Life service will begin at 11:00 AM, Wednesday at the church.  Burial will be private in Manchester Union Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Gary Zortman. Arrangements have been entrusted to Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 850 Pleasant Grove Road, York Haven, PA. 17370.
