Dean Grant Prowell
MOUNT WOLF – Dean “Pete” Grant Prowell, 96, of Mount Wolf, passed away, Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at SpiriTrust Lutheran Home in York. He was the husband of the late Patricia (Sparks) Prowell who passed away March 2, 2016.
Pete was born June 18, 1928, in Mount Wolf and was the son of the late Preston and Estella (Cross) Prowell.
He graduated in 1946 from Manchester High School in Manchester, PA. He was employed by L. K. Poff & Son for over 35 years before retiring. Pete loved hunting and fishing and was a charter member of the Wolves Rod and Gun Club, Starview Sportsmen’s Association, Central League Baseball Hall of Fame, Boston Braves, Farm System and Otterbein Church in Mount Wolf. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. During his time serving, he played baseball on the Army Team.
On January 8, 2000, Mr. Prowell, while fishing with two other individuals, played an important part in saving the lives of two victims by rescuing them from the icy waters of the Susquehanna River and quickly seeking medical assistance. His actions contributed to the full recovery of both victims and Pete received the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission LIFESAVING AWARD.
Pete is survived by his sons, Keith Prowell and his wife Rena of Hellam, Steve Prowell and his wife Sue of York, Scott Prowell and his wife, Teresa of Mount Wolf, and Brian Prowell and his wife Penny of Monroe, CT; stepsons, Donnie McCleary and Michael McCleary; his daughter, Joanne Kohler of Manchester, and stepdaughter, Connie Davis; fifteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bob Kohler, and his brothers, Charles Prowell and Terry Prowell.
His funeral service will begin at 12:00 PM, Monday, September 9, 2024, at Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf. His viewing will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Monday at the funeral home. His burial will be in Hoovers Cemetery in (Starview) Mount Wolf. Officiating at his service will be Reverend Ricky McCarl.
