Donald J. Doll

MOUNT WOLF – Donald J. Doll, passed from this life on Sunday, December 6, 2020, while a patient at Rest Haven Nursing Home.  He was 78 years of age.

He was born September 14, 1942 in the village of Saginaw and was the son of the late Clair Gordon Doll and Margaret Mae (Brenner) Doll.    

Don grew up in Starview on the family farm and attended Jerusalem School, a one room school house in Starview.  He graduated from Northeastern High School in the class of 1960.  He married his wife, Elaine M. (Wallick) Doll on May 24, 1968 and they were happily married for 52 years sharing life’s blessings together.

For employment, Don worked on a local farm and then took a job at York Container, where he worked until he volunteered for the draft.  He spent two years in the U. S. Army,that included a tour in Germany.  His military training was communications and this experience helped him with his next position at York Telephone & Telegraph Company, which became GTE and is presently Verizon.  He worked there as a lineman and cable splicer for thirty years.  After retirement he worked part time for Wellspan Pharmacy delivering pharmaceuticals for fourteen years. 

Don was a member of Union Lutheran Church in Saginaw from birth unit it closed its doors in 1989.  He then joined Mount Zion UCC where he is still a member.  Throughout his life, Don loved music and always sang on the choir and enjoyed singing solos at church and at weddings.  He served the New Holland Cemetery Association for nearly forty years and president in recent years, was a member of the Pleasureville American Legion Post #0799 and the Hawk Gunning Club.

Don enjoyed camping, vegetable gardening and took pride in maintaining his yard.  He loved history, especially York County history and the Civil War.  He and Elaine also enjoyed traveling and spending time in Myrtle Beach and Florida each year but, above all he adored his family, especially his children and his grandsons.

 In addition to his wife Elaine, he is survived by his daughter, Stacey L. Doll and her husband Will Ternay, III; two sons, Jason “Jake” A. Doll and his wife Holly and Dr. Joshua A. Doll and his wife Pamela. His grandsons are, Jakob W. Doll, U.S. Air Force, John C. Doll, Joseph A. Doll and a step grandson, Jacob W. Brenner. He also leaves two sisters, Susan Ferree and her husband Stanley and Nancy Leader Rutters and her husband Donald.  There are also three nieces and six nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his infant twin brother, Ronald Jacob Doll and his sister, Joan Leader Sweitzer.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Holland Cemetery, 2001 Village Circle East, York, PA 17404 or to Mount Zion UCC Church, 1054 Ridgewood Road, York, PA 17406.

A memorial service will be private due to Covid-19 but friends and family are encouraged to view the service at mtzionucc.org streaming services at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 14, 2020.  His pastor, Reverend Danielle Neff will officiate.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf.
