Doris M. (Spangler) Hamme

Doris M. (Spangler) Hamme, CRNP, 86 of York, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2026, with her children by her side.  She was the wife of the late Kerwin L. Hamme, Jr., who passed away, December 31, 2019.

Doris was born September 9, 1939, in York, PA, and was the daughter of the late Russell and Viola (Barshinger) Spangler.

She graduated in 1957 from York Central High School, and in 1960 from York Hospital School of Nursing where she received her certification as a Registered Nurse.  She enjoyed a 35-year career in nursing which included the private family practice of Dr. Warren Herrold in Mount Wolf, PA, and York Hospital and as an instructor for the LPN program at York School of Technology (formerly York County Vo-Tech).  In 1978, while employed in the York Hospital Emergency Department she was chosen to attend University of Maryland to receive training to become one of the first two Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNP) at York Hospital.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Rhee and her husband Kirk of Ellicott City, MD and Kimberly Cook and her husband Kevin of Windermere, FL; and her son, Karl Hamme and his wife Becky of York; her five grandchildren, Arla, Kristine, Ben, Dan and Ann Marie and six great grandchildren; her sister, Dolores Haag of York, PA and her brother, Robert Spangler of AZ; and her loving companion, Vance H. Eppley, Jr.  Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Barry Spangler.

Doris will be remembered for her love for her family, her love of a properly prepared afternoon tea, the way that she would try anything (especially if it was fast and high and gave her a great view), her ability to prepare holiday meals, make every person feel welcome in her home, and to decide what she wanted and make that happen!

Her memorial service will begin at 10:30 AM, Friday, March 20, 2026, at Pleasureville Christian Church, 2606 North Sherman Street, York, PA.  Her visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf, PA and 10:00 to 10:30 AM, Friday at the church.  Her burial will be private in Quickel Cemetery.  Officiating at her service will be Reverend David Kominsky.
