Harold W. Markley, Jr.
YORK HAVEN – Harold “Pete” W. Markley, Jr., 75, passed away, Saturday, October 30, 2021, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Harold suffered with IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) for 3 years before receiving a lung transplant in September 2018. The family is thankful for the generosity of the donor, which gave them 3 more years with Harold. He was the husband of Beverly (Reeser) Markley whom he married 52 years ago on June 15, 1969.
Harold was born October 3, 1946, in York and was the son of the late Harold W. Markley, Sr. and Arlene (Danner) Markley.
He graduated in 1964 from Northeastern High School in Manchester and 1968 from Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, PA. He was a teacher for West Shore School District for 31 years before retiring in 1999. He taught middle school science and was also a stage manager and coached middle school and youth baseball. After retirement he was employed by Home Depot in both Rehoboth, Delaware and York. He was President of Pleasant Grove Cemetery Association and a member of the Train Collectors Association and the Pontiac Oakland Club International. He loved to be outdoors mowing the lawn, tending to his homes, relaxing on the beach, traveling the USA, and going on cruises. He especially loved spending time with his family and introducing his grandson to model train collecting. Mr. Markley was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in York Haven where he was chairman of the administrative counsel for 30 years.
In addition to his wife, Beverly, Harold is survived by his son, Derek Markley and his wife Fonda of Wellsville, PA; his daughters, Erin Tierney and her husband Jim of Elizabethtown, PA and Britt Markley and her fiancé, Jerry Kalligonis of York, and one grandson, Jonah. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lana Y. Euculano.
His funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 880 Pleasant Grove Road, York Haven. Viewings will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf and Thursday 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery adjoining the church. Officiating at the service will be Pastors Gary Zortman and Judy Bupp.
