Harold Smith Obituary

YORK - Harold J. Smith, 82, of York, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 7:35 PM, at his home. He was the husband of the late Joyce F. (Weaver) Smith who passed away on April 10, 2002. Harold was born January 4, 1935 in York and was the son of the late Ivan and Mazie (Schmuck) Smith. He worked as a Well Driller early in his career and later as an auto mechanic with Preston Fiat in York and with his own business Smittie's Atlantic Service Center for over 25 years. He also was employed by Maple Press, Ross Industries and he drove truck part time. He was a member of the Wago Club in Mount Wolf. He always had a story to tell, which was normally preceded by "An old man told me once" and his advice and words of wisdom were a source of comfort to his family and friends. It seemed as though there was nothing he couldn't do and would try most things at least once. He loved to keep busy in his yard, working on cars or going to dinner or events with family and friends. His love and support through the years helped us all become the best we could be and he was so very proud of his family, particularly his granddaughter Jen who was the light of his life. Animals were drawn to his gentle spirit and he will be missed by his beloved dogs and cats. Harold is survived by his daughters, Allison Smith-Shaffer and her husband David of Mount Wolf, Melody Patton and her husband Michael of York; his son, Scott Iceman and his companion, Dawn; one granddaughter, Jennifer Brady and her fiancé Dominic of York; and his three brothers, Ralph, Paul and Freeman. Harold was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary and his sister, Gladys Wagman. His funeral service will begin at 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at The Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania. Viewing will be from 11:00 to 12:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be The Reverend Laura Bair from Starview United Church of Christ in Mount Wolf. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the York County SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA. 17406.
