Jay “Sonny” E. Snelbaker

MANCHESTER – Jay “Sonny” Elwood Snelbaker, 88, of Manchester, passed away, Thursday, January 20, 2022, at his home in Manchester. He was the husband of the late Louise Ann (Nicholas) Snelbaker who passed away on June 2, 2005.

Jay was born November 4, 1933, in Manchester and was the son of the late Luther Snelbaker, Sr.  and Mary (Biller) Snelbaker.

He was employed for 43 years with Campbell Chain/Cooper Tools in York before retiring in 1999. He previously was employed by St. Regis Box Factory in Mount Wolf. He was a lifetime member of the Northern York County Fish & Game Association and was a member of North American Fishing Club, North American Hunting Club, National Law Enforcement Officers, Human Society of the U.S., National Association of Police Organizations, Inc., and Station #27 Susquehanna Fire Company in York Haven where he was a 50-year member as of 2012 and was a Lieutenant Fire Police. He enjoyed working in his garage, doing for others, and loved being with his loved ones and friends.

Jay is survived by his daughter, Carol A. Kunkel of Manchester, his son, Chad Snelbaker of Manchester, who was his grandson but, was adopted as his son; three grandchildren, Dean Orwig, Jr., Cody Snelbaker and Emma Snelbaker; and his brothers, Larry Snelbaker, Luther Snelbaker, Jr., and Wayne Snelbaker and his sisters, Patty Renfrew, Judy Ewell, Shirley Crone, and Betty Emminger. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Ray Snelbaker, Harold Snelbaker, Clarence Snelbaker and Jimmy Snelbaker and his sister, Viola Kerrigan, Emma Jane Sanger. Gerti O’Dell, Mae Zeigler, Mary Ellen Stump.

His services and burial will be private. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Arrangements have been entrusted to Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf.
