Jerrold F. Garling

YORK- Jerrold F. Garling, age 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, faith, music, laughter, and devotion to his family and community.

Jerry lived a life centered on people. Alongside his beloved wife, Shana, he helped establish Shana’s School of Ballet in 1971. What began as a small dance school grew into a place where generations of young dancers and their families found encouragement, friendship, and a sense of belonging. The school continues today as Dance It Forward, carrying forward the spirit of community and service that Jerry and Shana helped create.

During dance classes, Jerry welcomed parents into the family living room for conversation and companionship, creating lasting relationships that extended far beyond the studio walls. To many students over the years, he was affectionately known as “Mister Shana.” He became a mentor, friend, and father figure to countless young people and families whose lives were touched by his kindness and generosity.

His commitment to serving others extended throughout the community. Jerry served as President of the Mount Wolf Borough Council and dedicated many years as Executive Director of the Miss York County Pageant, encouraging and supporting young women as they pursued their goals and dreams.

A devoted man of faith and music, Jerry served as choir director at St. John Lutheran Church in Mount Wolf, where he shared his love of music and worship with his congregation. His leadership and dedication touched many lives within his church family.

Jerry was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his quick wit, and his ability to make people laugh. He valued friendships, loved conversation, and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. His warmth, compassion, and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shana, who passed away in 2020.

Jerry is survived by his loving daughter, Lori; his cherished granddaughter, Pastelle; his son-in-law, Terry; his niece, Kim and her husband, Dave; his sister-in-law, Dawn; and his brother-in-law, Bill. He also leaves behind generations of former students, dance families, church members, friends, and community members whose lives were enriched by his friendship, guidance, and kindness.

Jerry’s greatest legacy is found in the people whose lives he touched through his service, his music, his humor, and his unwavering kindness. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Celebration of Life service will begin at 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania. Officiating at his service will be Reverend Janyce Jorgensen.
