Joan L. Metzger
YORK – Joan L. (Gunnet) Metzger, 86, of York, formerly of Spring Grove, PA, passed away, peacefully surrounded by her family, Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Wellspan York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Larry R. Metzger who passed away March 15, 2023, just shy of their 61st wedding anniversary.
Joan was born September 15, 1938, in York New Salem and was the daughter of the late Francis and Miriam (Klinedinst) Gunnet and the stepdaughter of the late James Conway.
She graduated in 1956 from Spring Grove Senior High School in Spring Grove, PA. She was a 1959 graduate of the former Lankenau School of Nursing and then began working as a Registered Nurse at Lankenau Hospital in the Labor and Delivery Unit. She served as her high school class treasurer from 1956 until 2023; a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Women’s Group, delivered meals on wheels and volunteered where she was needed. She was a member of St. Jacob’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in York New Salem, PA.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Sharon St. Hart and her husband Morton, of Thomasville, PA, her sons, William Metzger and his wife Kelly of Spring Grove, PA, Neal Metzger and his wife Billie of Seven Valleys, PA and Samuel Metzger and his wife Kimberly of East Berlin, PA, thirteen grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and her sister, Darlene Welter of York, PA.
Her memorial service will begin at 3:00 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2024, at St. Jacob’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 99 East George Street, York New Salem, PA. Her visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Saturday, at the Church. She and her beloved husband’s burial will be in St. Jacob’s Union Cemetery following her funeral service. Officiating at the service will be her pastor Reverend Lisa Hair. Arrangements have been entrusted to Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf, PA.
