Larry L. Witmer
MANCHESTER – Larry L. Witmer, 82, of Manchester, passed away Wednesday May 12, 2021, at York Hospital.
Larry was born September 1, 1938, in York and was the son of the late Harvey “Pud” and Ruth (Brothers) Witmer.
Larry went to a one room school house in Newberry Township and a two room school house in Conewago Township. He graduated in the last class from Manchester High School in 1958. After graduation Larry enlisted in the United States Navy serving aboard the USS Hancock and the USS Ticonderoga CVA-19 where he served as a Machinist Mate, Second Class Petty Officer on both ships. Both ships were attack aircraft carriers serving in the Far East and the Gulf of Tonkin. He was nominated as the outstanding Man of the Month in July 1962 on the Ticonderoga, also known as the “BIG T”. Larry did civil war reenacting as Chief of Artillary in the Grand Armies of the Republic. He was known as George Custer, Brig General 1st Conewago. He was a life member of the Susquehanna V.F.W. Post 2493 in Mount Wolf and a life member in the Central Penn Antique Arm Clubs. He loved dogs and cats .
Larry is survived by his two sisters, Nancy Shearer and Joyce Brodbeck and several nieces and nephews.
Services for Larry will be private. Private burial will be in Strinestown Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf. York County Veterans Honor Guard will provide graveside honors.
