Mary Agnes (Kauffman) Toomey
Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania – Mary Toomey, 92, passed away, Thursday, September 30, 2021. Mary is survived by her devoted husband of 72 years, Dr. Ronald Toomey.
She was born May 11, 1929, in Mount Wolf where she grew up, raised her family and was a well-known and longstanding member of the community.
Mary was a classical pianist and for many years the organist at her church, often claiming music was the catalyst that introduced her to her husband, also an accomplished musician, and charted the course for the rest of their life together. She was a Master Gardener who enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens every year, and a member of P.E.O, a philanthropic organization that educates young women around the glove. She also held the position of former Vice Chair of the York Democratic Party and cofounded Grassroots Organization along with partner former Mayor Betty Marshall. Mary loved animals and was a frequent supporter of the local shelters. She was a member of Golden Oldies at the Unitarian Universalist Church of York (UUCY), the Foreign Policy Association in Harrisburg, and taught music privately and in the York public school district for many years. She enjoyed cooking and attended culinary classes, establishing a successful catering company called “Very Truly Yours.
In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her two children, Christine Pena, of Miami Beach, Florida and Michael Toomey and wife Robin of Coconut Grove, Florida; grandchildren, Chloe-Firetto Toomey Noe, husband Alan Noe, Kelsey Catherine Toomey, and Michael Robert; two nieces, Lee Anne Buchanan and Lori Newbauer.
Funeral services for Mary will begin at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 87 South Main Street, Mount Wolf. Burial will be private. Officiating at her service will be Reverend Arthur Hover and Reverend Jen Raffensperger.
