Reverend Marshall H. Gante

YORK – Reverend Marshall H. Gante, 92, of York, passed away, Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at his home.  He was the husband of Lois (Johnson) Gante who he married 68 years ago on June 12, 1953.

Pastor Gante was born September 26, 1929, in Jamestown, New York and was the son of the late Henry and Audrey (Johnson) Gante.

He graduated in 1947 from Jamestown High School in Jamestown, New York. He graduated in 1954 from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN and in 1958 from Augustana Seminary in Rock Island, IL.  He was a member of the Retired Lutheran Ministers Group and a member of St. Jacob’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in York New Salem.  Pastor Gante proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Pastor Gante was an ordained minister for over 60 years.  Before retiring from full-time ministry, he was pastor of St. Jacob’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in York New Salem, and then part-time interim pastor at several churches in the area.  Before coming to York, he served churches in Garfield, MN, Youngsville, PA, Charleston, WV, Erie, PA, and Sunbury, PA.

He will be remembered for his contagious faith, sacrificial generosity, genuine humility, playful sense of humor, uncommon kindness, and unconditional love for his family, friends, and dogs.

In addition to his wife, Lois, Pastor Gante is survived by his sons, Jeff Gante and his wife Jamie of Camp Hill, PA, Jon Gante of Erie, PA, and Jim Gante and his wife Ginny of York, PA; his daughter, Barb Lamoreaux and her husband Chuck of Taneytown, MD, 10 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter, his sisters, Rebecca Linquist and Susan Gante both of Asheville, NC and his son-in-law, Ron McCarty of Erie, PA.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Corinne McCarty and his granddaughter, Erin McCarty.

A celebration of life service will begin at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 18, 2022, at St. Jacobs Evangelical Lutheran Church, 99 East George Street, York New Salem, PA.  Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, Friday at the church.  Burial will be private.  Officiating at the service will be his pastor Reverend Lisa Hair.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf.
