SILVER SPRING, MD. – Robert Dean Custer, 83, of Silver Spring, Maryland, formerly of York, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Bedford Court Nursing Home in Silver Spring Maryland. He was the husband of the late Ann (Connelly) Custer.
Robert was born July 19, 1934 in Johnstown, PA., and was the son of the late Richard and Martha (DeShong) Custer.
He graduated from William Penn High School in 1952 and then went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Drafting and Design Technology from Penn State York in 1956. He proudly served as a plant manager at Gardner Denver/Cooper Industries for over 30 years before leaving the company in 1984. He finished his career as an Engineer/Sales Representative for Transply, Inc. before retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Susquehanna Lions Club, where he served as president from 1992-1993. He also volunteered at the Northeastern Food Pantry and for York Little Theater and was a member of the Lutheran Men’s Club and St. John Lutheran Church in Mount Wolf.
Robert is survived by his son, Dean A. Custer and his partner Jose Antonio Ruiz Alonso of Torrijos, Spain, his daughter, Carol Howell and her husband, Charles of Olney, MD.; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Anna and his brother, John F. Custer of Providence, RI.
A celebration of life service will begin at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 14, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church, 28 North Third Street, Mount Wolf. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:30 AM. Burial will be in Hoover’s Cemetery in Starview. Officiating at the service will be his pastor The Reverend Jason Northridge.
